Front End Programmer Analyst

General Summary/Purpose

Web developers at the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) are responsible for the full software lifecycle of applications related to educational technology at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. CTL Web developers focus on the building of Web applications for faculty, students, and administrators at the School, while also working to create and deliver engaging content for classes across the academic enterprise and for the public health workforce at large.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Design and develop user interfaces for web applications built by the Center for Teaching and Learning in conjunction with the CTL web development team.
  2. Analyze and synthesize requirements presented by JHSPH faculty, staff and students into usable, effective Web application interfaces.
  3. Implement and debug user interfaces for all CTL web applications in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, adhering to web standards and best practices.
  4. Ensure CTL web application interfaces conform to W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.0, Level AA.
  5. Create or maintain new features of larger applications designed to support online educational activities at the School of Public Health, including coordination of development of back–end code as it relates to front–end implementations.
  6. Create educational content for CTL projects, including lecture presentations, training content, animations, and web video.
  7. Provide technical support to faculty, staff and students on an occasional, as-needed basis.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in applicable discipline.

1 year related experience.

Direct programming experience while pursuing education may count towards related experience. Significant undergraduate programming coursework or independent project can be considered as related experience.

Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the

JHU Equivalency Formula

: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years experience in user interface design, web design, and usability engineering.
  • Excellent CSS, JavaScript and HTML coding skills, including work with Angular.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Familiarity with ColdFusion, PHP, or Python.
  • Familiarity with SQL, and relational database technologies.
  • Experience in developing responsive websites with CSS frameworks.
  • Experience working with Git or GitHub.
  • Ability to work independently with some supervision by senior CTL staff.
  • Excellent problem solving, written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to learn new software applications and languages as needed.
  • Web application development experience in PHP, Python, Rails, or ASP.NET is also acceptable. The successful candidate will be trained in the CFML language as needed.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
